For most dealerships, payments are the last thing anyone thinks about – which is exactly why they’re one of the biggest missed opportunities on the floor.

THE QUICK VERSION

  • Most dealers treat payments as an operational cost, not a source of insight, control, or efficiency.
  • When payments aren’t integrated with your DMS, you lose visibility into how revenue actually moves through the store.
  • Embedded payments delivers real-time financial intelligence.
  • Investing in embedded payments is an investment in your operational efficiency and financial transparency
  • Lightspeed RevPay brings processing, reconciliation, reporting, and support into one workflow.
Ask a dealer about their payments. Watch what happens.

I have the great opportunity to speak with dealers across powersports, RV, marine, trailer, and golf every week. When I ask how sales are going, or how the service department is performing, I get detailed, confident answers. When I ask how payments are going, the conversation usually stops at one word: “fine.”

That gap tells you everything. Dealers can recite their close rate, their fixed-ops absorption, and their aged inventory down to the unit. But payments — the single moment where every one of those efforts turns into actual money — is treated as plumbing. It works, so nobody looks at it.

The problem is that “it works” and “it’s working for you” are two very different things.

What you can’t see is costing you

When your payment processing sits outside your dealer management system, you’re running your most important financial function in the dark. Deposits land in systems only your accounting team understands. Reconciliation happens after the fact, by hand, matching one system against another. Funding timing, chargebacks, and fees live somewhere your managers never look.

Beyond those silos, there are others that become painfully apparent when the numbers don’t match or there’s an issue. The processor doesn’t understand your business or systems. The software provider doesn’t understand or have visibility into your payments system.

None of that is catastrophic on any given day. But over a month, a quarter, a year, it adds up to a store that can’t answer basic questions quickly: How much did we actually collect this week? Where is that funding? Why doesn’t the batch match the deals? Who can help me solve this issue without the runaround? Every one of those questions is revenue visibility you’ve given away.

The shift: payments as an operating layer

The dealers pulling ahead have stopped thinking about payments as a transaction utility and started treating them as an operating layer — part of how they run the business, not a service they buy and forget. That shift is what makes embedded payments matter. Lightspeed RevPay℠ is embedded tightly into Lightspeed DMS, so every payment flows through the same workflow where your team already writes repair orders, closes deals, and looks up parts.

When payments live inside the DMS, four things change immediately:

  • You get a single source of truth. Real-time reporting sits inside Lightspeed, auto-reconciliation matches to accounting, and funding visibility is right there — no separate portal, no export-and-compare.
  • You get financial clarity on demand. You can see how money is moving through the store today, not reconstruct it at month-end.
  • You get better data for every decision downstream. Payments data unified inside the DMS strengthens the reporting and insight you already rely on.
  • You work with a team who understands and cares – about your business, about your needs, about your history, and how everything works together.
This is a leadership decision

Speaking directly to owners and GMs reading this: the payments question doesn’t belong to your back office. It belongs to you. The person who cares about cash flow, gross, and where the business is exposed is the person who should decide how payments are run.

That’s the mindset behind RevPay. It’s a fully embedded, DMS-native payments platform that unifies processing, reconciliation, reporting, and support — and gives you back the visibility that a non-integrated processor quietly takes away. Payments stop being the thing nobody looks at and become a part of dealership performance you can actually manage.

While it’s important to you, it’s also important to Lightspeed. We could have easily taken a different path of integration, but that would not deliver the experience that’s best for you. This also provides Lightspeed with a platform to build upon – new features, capabilities, and payment methods that specifically meet the needs of this industry. Building a payments business within Lightspeed requires significant investment on our part to build and maintain systems, to hire teams who understand and care about your industry, and to build payments into every process and team in our organization.

This is a long-term leadership position – one that we are proud to take. We made this investment because it allows us to deliver the best experience to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “embedded payments” actually mean?

Embedded payments are built into your dealer management system rather than bolted on or standalone terminal from an outside vendor. Transactions, reconciliation, reporting, and support all live in the same workflow you already use, instead of in a separate processor portal.

How is that different from the processor I have now?

A traditional processor moves money but lives outside your DMS, which usually means manual reconciliation, a separate login for reporting, and a separate support team. Payments is completely disjointed, which leads to entry errors, reconciliation challenges, and a processor support team who is very narrowly focused. Embedded payments like Lightspeed RevPay keep all of that inside Lightspeed, so your data and your support are in one place.

Do embedded payments really improve financial visibility?

Yes — because the data isn’t stranded in another system. With payments inside the DMS, funding status, reconciliation, and reporting are visible in real time alongside the rest of your operation, which makes cash-flow and performance questions far easier to answer.

If your payments still live outside your DMS, you’re managing your most important financial moment with the least visibility and holding your breath that you never have to call that processor for help. Lightspeed RevPay is built to change that –  one workflow, one source of truth, one team behind it.
