I recently spoke with a dealership owner who was frustrated by something many leaders experience: his sales team was busy all day, but the results didn’t reflect the effort.
Sound familiar?
The reality is that most salespeople aren’t struggling because they lack motivation. They’re struggling because they spend too much time on activities that don’t directly contribute to winning business. They’re answering questions, handling internal requests, chasing low-value opportunities, and reacting to whatever feels urgent at the moment.
The result? They stay busy but fail to increase market share.
When I evaluate sales organizations, I focus on two key metrics:
Deal Visibility Rate – How many opportunities in your market are you aware of before your competitors?
Deal Closure Rate – How many of those opportunities do you actually win?
Many dealerships concentrate on improving close rates while overlooking visibility. But if your team only sees half the opportunities available in your market, even exceptional sales skills won’t maximize growth.
Here’s the math that should get your attention: if you see 80% of deals and close 55% of what you see, you’re capturing 44% market share in your territory. If you’re only seeing 40% of deals and closing 45% of those, you’re at 18% market share. Same market, same products, same pricing—the only difference is sales execution.
The dealerships that consistently win have a structured process for identifying target accounts, prioritizing opportunities, and protecting dedicated prospecting time every week. They don’t wait for customers to come to them—they actively build relationships long before a purchase decision is made.
Technology plays a role as well. A CRM system that tracks interactions, schedules follow-ups, and identifies buying signals can dramatically improve sales effectiveness.
The bottom line is simple: market share isn’t built by staying busy. It’s built by consistently creating visibility into opportunities and then executing a disciplined sales process to win them.
If your sales team is working hard but not seeing the results they deserve, start by examining how their time is actually being spent. You may discover the biggest opportunity isn’t adding more activity—it’s focusing on the right activity.
